    Blending As You Read
I'm really glad to see you're drawing attention to the importance of blending. The procedures you recommend are explicit and they work for lots of kids.

However, I find that those who may end up struggling with reading or being identified as dyslexic need one small extra step with blending instruction.

To support them, I teach Blend As You Read, or what Isabel Beck calls "continuous blending." So, I actually stop the student after they've said the first 2 sounds and THEN ask them to already start blending the sounds together. I ask them to stretch or sing the vowel i.e., /mmmaa---/ and then when they say the last sound (i.e., /p/) they can easily read the word: "map!"

I've written about this more in depth and include video examples here: http://readingsimplified.com/one-and-done-nearly/

Might you consider linking to this article for folks who might need alternatives for struggling readers?

    Thanks!!

    Favorite Read Aloud
Hey everybody, I'm hoping I can get some conversation going on so that we can share ideas. I thought I'd start things off by asking you to share your favorite book(s) to read aloud to your students and maybe an extension activity to go with the book (discussion topic, writing, art project, center, etc.).
